The Police M-PAiSA Task Force is intensifying efforts to combat a rise in scams affecting the M-PAiSA platform, a concern that has grown significantly. Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has urgently called on the public to remain alert, particularly during the withdrawal of Back to School Assistance funds.
Fong Chew strongly advises against allowing children and unaccompanied individuals to manage financial transactions, stressing the importance of adults being responsible for these withdrawals. “You don’t know who is at the sidelines exploring the opportunity to steal information or money,” he emphasized, highlighting the potential risks families face during this financially sensitive period.
In tandem with this advisory, previous warnings have been issued regarding the increased prevalence of scams targeting vulnerable groups, especially during the back-to-school season. The Fiji Police have noted that scams frequently utilize popular communication platforms—including text messages, Viber, WhatsApp, and Facebook—to solicit personal and financial information under false pretenses. Parents and guardians are reminded to be skeptical of unsolicited requests and to safeguard sensitive information such as Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and passwords.
The police are also advocating for community education about common scams and responsible financial practices. Building awareness and sharing knowledge among families can enhance financial security and collective resilience against fraud.
This initiative aims not only to thwart scammers but also to promote a supportive community where families can safely navigate financial transactions. By prioritizing vigilance and informed decision-making, the public can bolster their defenses against potential scams this school season and beyond.
In summary, the current efforts focused on raising awareness about financial safety during school-related transactions reflect a broader commitment to ensuring community welfare in the face of rising fraud risks. The proactive stance from law enforcement encourages families to engage in safe practices, ultimately contributing to a more secure local environment.
