Beware: Scammers Evolve in Fiji’s Digital Age

Scammers are constantly adapting their methods to align with global trends. This was emphasized by Shaheen Ali, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, during the kickoff of the inaugural National Scam Awareness Week.

“In our fast-paced digital world, it is vital to recognize that scams have regrettably become a part of everyday life,” Mr. Ali stated. He outlined various scams currently impacting Fiji, including impersonation schemes, fraudulent job offers, and romance scams, which are often fueled by misleading communications on social media platforms.

“The National Scam Awareness Week serves as a crucial platform for educating not only young adults but also future generations about identifying and safeguarding themselves against scams,” he added. To enhance outreach, the campaign will leverage multiple media outlets, including billboards and social media, to increase public awareness.

Meanwhile, Seema Shandil, the chief executive officer of the Consumer Council of Fiji, pointed out the lack of engagement from consumers during their outreach efforts. However, there is a notable spike in demand for their services once individuals fall victim to scams.

“Despite our regular warnings about potential scams and advice on recognizing scammers, many consumers continue to be indifferent,” Ms. Shandil remarked. Despite extensive awareness campaigns, both online and at the community level, individuals often disregard the guidance provided. Unfortunately, this lack of attention frequently results in consumers seeking assistance only after becoming victims of scams.

Last year, the eBay Online Shop recruitment scam had a detrimental impact, affecting 900 Fijians and leading to complaints totaling $1.7 million, according to the council. “The damage inflicted by such scams is just the start of the issue,” Ms. Shandil added.

On a global scale, online fraud has surged, with phishing emails and other deceptive tactics targeting individuals and businesses alike. To combat this, the Anti-Scam Taskforce has been established to improve agency coordination, promote awareness, and advocate for protective measures through initiatives like Scam Awareness Week. The taskforce aims to enhance public understanding and execute joint educational campaigns while pushing for stricter laws and regulations.
