Beware: Scammers Adapt in Fiji’s Digital Landscape

Scammers are continuously adapting their methods in response to global trends. This message was conveyed by Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, as he launched the inaugural National Scam Awareness Week.

“In our fast-paced digital world, it is essential to recognize that scams have regrettably become an everyday issue,” Mr. Ali remarked. He discussed the various scams currently affecting Fiji, such as impersonation schemes, fraudulent job offers, and romance scams, which are often amplified through misleading social media communications.

“The National Scam Awareness Week serves as a crucial platform to educate not only young adults but also future generations on how to identify and shield themselves from scams,” he stated. To maximize its reach, the campaign will utilize various media outlets, including billboards and social media, to enhance public awareness.

In addition, Seema Shandil, the chief executive officer of the Consumer Council of Fiji, pointed out that consumer engagement during their outreach initiatives was lacking. However, there was a noticeable uptick in demand for their services when individuals fell victim to scams.

“Despite our repeated warnings about potential scams and guidance on recognizing scammers, many consumers still display complacency,” Ms. Shandil explained. She noted that even with extensive awareness campaigns conducted online and at the community level, many individuals chose to disregard the advice.

Regrettably, this negligence often results in consumers seeking assistance only after they have been scammed. Last year, the impact of the eBay Online Shop recruitment scam affected 900 Fijians and led to complaints totaling $1.7 million, according to the council.

“The damage inflicted by these scams is just the tip of the iceberg,” Ms. Shandil remarked. On a global scale, online fraud is on the rise, with phishing emails and other deceptive tactics targeting individuals and businesses alike.

The Anti-Scam Taskforce has been established to improve coordination among various agencies, raise awareness, and advocate for protective measures through initiatives like Scam Awareness Week. The taskforce aims to enhance public knowledge and launch collaborative educational campaigns, alongside pushing for stricter laws and regulations.
