As the Diwali season nears, consumers are encouraged to make well-informed purchasing decisions and be aware of their rights. While this festival of lights fosters excitement and generosity, it is essential that consumers safeguard their finances and ensure that their spending is both thoughtful and worthwhile.
Last year, the Consumer Council of Fiji recorded 163 complaints during Diwali, amounting to over $15,000, highlighting a variety of consumer issues. These complaints included the absence of displayed prices, inconsistencies between advertised prices and the charges at checkout, and the sale of expired food items. Additionally, there were reports of food products being contaminated, with some infested with weevils.
A significant concern noted by the Council during the Diwali period is price gouging, where essential items experience undue price increases due to heightened demand. For instance, there was a notable spike in ghee prices a few weeks ago, alongside recurrent complaints regarding overpricing on regulated essential food products.
Consumers are also advised to be mindful of common issues related to hair and beauty treatments, including unsatisfactory service. Online shopping has presented its own set of challenges, with several customers reporting non-delivery of items after making payments.
“Diwali is a joyful time, but it’s vital for consumers to stay alert while shopping. We advise everyone to be cautious, avoid hasty purchases, and thoroughly review their items before completing any transactions,” stated Council CEO Seema Shandil. “Keeping your receipts is crucial, as it facilitates redress in case of any post-purchase issues.”
Being aware of potential problems, such as inconsistencies at checkout, overcharging of regulated items, and the pitfalls of online shopping, will help create a more enjoyable and stress-free festive experience. She further warned that risks extend to online shopping, where scams may increase during the festive period, urging consumers to exercise caution, verify the credibility of websites, and confirm the authenticity of products before making purchases.
