The Bau District School’s under-12 girls’ rugby team faced unique challenges during their training for the Get Into Rugby Plus Festival. Adhering to the iTaukei protocol, the young athletes trained in skirts and dresses, which presented some discomfort compared to the shorts they typically wear in Suva. Despite this obstacle, they demonstrated resilience and commitment as they participated in the one-day tournament, where each school received a commemorative trophy in recognition of their involvement.
Coach and Year Six teacher Dominika Marama highlighted that while the attire posed difficulties during practice, the team focused on their goal of performing well and aspiring to join the Tailevu women’s rugby team in the future. She expressed gratitude to the parents and guardians for their support and understanding, enabling their children to take part in this enriching experience.
This initiative showcases the dedication of young athletes who navigate cultural protocols while pursuing their passion for sports. The commitment of the Bau District School girls is commendable and reflects the positive influence of community support in fostering talent and teamwork among the next generation.
In summary, while the team faced challenges in their training attire, their resilience allowed them to successfully participate in the tournament, paving the way for future aspirations in rugby.
