A significant investment of $3.8 million has been allocated for the rehabilitation of houses affected by termites within the Western and Central Divisions. According to Sakiasi Tubuna, co-chair of the Termite Taskforce and Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, this funding has been utilized to address a total of 775 homes.

Mr. Tubuna noted that 448 applications were approved in the last fiscal year, with 327 more approved in the current financial year. He highlighted that the government is not only focused on rehabilitation but is also expanding its termite baiting program beyond the areas of Ba, Lautoka, Nadi, Labasa, and Nakasi.

In this initiative, Flick Hygiene Pte Ltd has been contracted to implement a baiting system for 1,000 households, with an aim to eradicate existing termite colonies through strategically placed bait stations in high-risk zones. Mr. Tubuna emphasized that the termite baiting services provided under the Termite Subsidy Program will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sashi Kiran, co-chair and Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, pointed out the importance of registering properties for the program. She urged community members to come forward and register with the Taskforce or the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, stressing that while there will be no monetary assistance provided, the baiting service is essential for preventing further structural damage to homes.

Flick Hygiene’s executive director, Mohammed Zakariah, confirmed that they have received the necessary approvals from the Ministry of Agriculture for the mass distribution of bait to hardware stores nationwide, with each bait costing between $30 and $40.

This strong governmental response highlights a proactive approach to combating termite infestations, ultimately aiming to protect communities and ensure the safety of their homes.

Summary: The government has invested $3.8 million to rehabilitate termite-infested houses in the Western and Central Divisions, addressing 775 homes. The ongoing termite baiting program, in collaboration with Flick Hygiene, aims to help communities eliminate pests. Residents are encouraged to register for these services, which are vital for home preservation.
