Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has described drug abuse as a significant national issue that is ruining the lives of individuals, families, and communities. During the coronation ceremony for Miss GoldnWater and Miss Charity at the Vodafone GoldnWater Carnival in Tavua, he emphasized the severe impact drugs could have on the nation if people do not take a stand against it.
He highlighted that the government is implementing a National Drug and Narcotics Strategy while intensifying efforts within the Police Force and other agencies to combat drug use and its harmful effects on society.
Prasad urged youth and anyone connected to drugs—whether through use or distribution—to reject the substance, stressing that drugs lead not just to personal destruction but also harm families, friendships, economic productivity, and the overall social structure of the country.
He referenced global examples where the drug epidemic, particularly involving hard drugs, has led to widespread destruction of communities and individuals.
