Baton of Honour: A Young Leader’s Journey to Time Management and Discipline

Joeli Yabaki, the parade commander at the Naqere Youth Training Centre, reflected on his journey to receiving the Baton of Honour, emphasizing the importance of time management. The 18-year-old, originally from Nabouwalu, Bua, participated in the carpentry program at the training facility in Savusavu.

Mr. Yabaki described the cadet passing-out parade for students from the Fiji National Youth Training Centre as an emotional and rewarding experience. The combined event showcased students from two youth training centers located in Naleba, Labasa, and Naqere, Savusavu.

In total, 25 male and seven female cadets from Naleba graduated, alongside 24 male and two female cadets from Naqere, who completed their training. Mr. Yabaki noted that the seven-week training program instilled discipline and honesty, as well as a sense of civic responsibility among the youth.

“The training contributed to my personal growth and guided me in making wise decisions while leading the parade,” he stated. His family attended the ceremony, and he expressed that many young people today engage in unproductive activities. He encouraged youth to make better use of their time through meaningful pursuits.

As the overall best all-rounder of the group, Mr. Yabaki advocated for the continuation of annual cadet training programs to further cultivate positive development among students. He acknowledged the initial pressure cadets felt to meet the expectations of their parents and teachers, but he mentioned that with every successful drill, their confidence grew.
