BAT Fiji Goes Green: $1.2M Solar Project Aims for Sustainability

British American Tobacco Fiji has entered into a contract with Vision Energy Solutions for a $1.2 million solar energy project in Nabua and Nadi.

This agreement entails the installation of solar panels at BAT Fiji’s Nabua factory and the Leaf Division in Nadi, with an anticipated power system capacity of 812kW. The new system is expected to produce around 880,000 kWh of electricity annually for both locations.

Sam Dormor, BAT Fiji’s general manager, emphasized that this solar initiative represents a significant step in the company’s sustainability efforts. He noted that in the past two years, BAT Fiji has made substantial advances and investments aimed at tackling climate change.

Dormor pointed out that the collaboration with Vision Energy Solutions is projected to reduce the company’s electricity consumption by approximately 60% and lower carbon emissions at the Nabua site by about 32%. This aligns with BAT Fiji’s sustainability target of achieving 50% renewable energy and a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.

Installation of the solar panels began earlier this week and is scheduled to be completed by January 2025.

Sanjesh Prasad, CEO of Vision Investments, expressed pride in partnering with BAT Fiji on this solar venture. He highlighted that the company has developed a skilled local team adept at executing large-scale solar projects throughout the country.

Prasad stated that Vision Energy Solutions manages all aspects of the project internally, from supply and installation to commissioning and servicing, which allows for comprehensive after-sales support. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to promoting renewable energy for businesses in Fiji while positively impacting the environment through sustainable practices and community collaboration.
