The Barracuda Swim Club triumphed at the Fiji Short Course Age Groups Nationals competition, achieving an outstanding tally of 72 Gold, 53 Silver, and 35 Bronze medals over the weekend. Tritons Swim Club finished in second place, with Great White Sharks taking the third spot.
Fiji Swimming’s president, Lucy Erasito, expressed her gratitude to the coaches for their commitment to the athletes and to the parents for their continued support. “The athletes have been training tirelessly over the past few months, skillfully balancing their academics with their preparation. Their dedication has truly been remarkable,” Erasito noted.
The competition was notable for the breaking of eight Age Group National records and six Fiji Open records. Specific commendations were given to standout performers such as Grace Khelan, Hansel McCaig, Nigel Simpson, and Samuel Yalimaiwai, who all achieved record-breaking results during the championships.
Grace Khelan notably set four records, including two national records in the 11-12 age category for the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, as well as two Fiji short course open records in the same events. Nigel Simpson excelled in the 8 and Under category, breaking two Fiji Short Course Open records for the 50m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke.
Samuel Yalimaiwai earned a new National record in the 17 & Over category for the 50m Breaststroke, while Hansel McCaig made headlines by breaking seven records in the same age group, securing five SC national records in multiple events, along with two Fiji Open SC records.
Officials were also recognized for their essential role in ensuring the event’s success, highlighting the collaborative effort that made the competition possible.
This year’s event showcases the potential of swimming talent in Fiji, serving as a reminder of the hard work and determination that these young athletes embody.
