Bangladeshi Workers Raise Alarm Over Wage Cuts and Treatment in Fiji

A group of over 100 Bangladeshi laborers is expressing serious concerns regarding their treatment by a construction company based in Suva, Fiji. The workers, who range in age from their 20s to 60s and possess diverse construction skills, sought media attention after attempts to resolve issues directly with their employer failed.

One individual, who chose to remain anonymous, reported that the hourly wage they were promised—$8—has been systematically reduced, nearly halving what they were originally contracted for. Complaints also include failure to receive overtime pay and facing derogatory remarks from both peers and supervisors. Another worker shared feelings of disappointment, as they had come to what they believed was a beautiful opportunity in Fiji, only to experience unfavorable working conditions which were exacerbated by taking on significant loans for their travel.

In a response to these allegations, the company’s human resources manager stated that all concerns raised by the workers were addressed after meetings held recently. He asserted that the promised wage is being paid, although some workers are on fixed rates. He mentioned that, by the nature of their employment contracts, the work required could fluctuate based on project demands, potentially affecting individual workers’ hours.

To improve communication in the future, two workers have been designated as liaisons between the laborers and management, fostering a clearer channel for grievances. The HR manager also emphasized the company’s policy against any form of harassment and asserted that any threats made against workers would be taken seriously and reported to the proper authorities.

This situation highlights essential labor issues and underscores the importance of transparent communication between workers and employers. While the laborers are voicing their struggles, it also appears that the company is taking steps to ensure all grievances are addressed and resolved.
