Balancing Budgets and Wellbeing: The Overtime Dilemma in Suva

The Suva City Council (SCC) allocates an annual budget of approximately $1.5 to $2 million for overtime pay for its employees. Chairperson Tevita Boseiwaqa brought attention to this considerable expenditure, which involves around 80 staff members. He pointed out that recent audit findings emphasized the importance of balancing workload with employee health and overall performance.

Mr. Boseiwaqa stressed the negative implications of overworking staff, noting that such practices lead to reduced productivity. To address this concern, the Council is actively engaging local youth to promote work-life balance among employees, ensuring that overtime does not take a toll on their health.

In response to the audited findings, the SCC has implemented measures aimed at regulating overtime while still delivering efficient services. Certain shifts, particularly early morning assignments from 8 am to 2 pm, have significantly contributed to overtime costs. One specific unit alone accounted for over $200,000 in overtime.

The Council is focused on managing, rather than completely eliminating, overtime work to guarantee that staff have ample time for personal life, thereby enhancing their health and reducing stress levels. Mr. Boseiwaqa noted that the adjustments made have already resulted in improvements in staff morale and productivity.

This proactive approach reflects a dedication to fostering a healthier work environment, which in turn can lead to higher efficiency and overall success within the Council. By prioritizing employee wellbeing, the SCC sets a positive example for other organizations to follow.
