Balancing Act: The Unpopular Job of a Finance Minister

Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad emphasizes that his role is not about seeking popularity. Speaking on The Lens@177 this week, Prof Prasad noted that finance ministers are rarely popular even in the best of times. “It’s not about me failing as Minister of Finance; it’s about not failing the country,” he stated.

He elaborated that his mission, in line with that of the Prime Minister and the Coalition Government, is to ensure that the right actions are taken for the country’s benefit. Prof Prasad stressed that his work is aimed at serving the interests of the people, particularly those with low incomes and the vulnerable sections of society.

Prof Prasad highlighted that he has established an economic model that could help future governments succeed and improve the country’s welfare. This includes measures to raise revenue, which he believes is sometimes necessary to provide support to the most disadvantaged groups.

He noted, “This is precisely the economic model that we have implemented since the last budget and in this budget. Even if we are not in power after the next election, our successors will recognize the logic and benefits of our budgets.”

By the time his term finishes, Prof Prasad is confident the country will be on a much stronger economic footing, setting up a solid foundation for any future government. “That’s how we’re approaching the management of the economy,” he concluded.
