Bainimarama’s Phone Controversy: What Really Happened?

Fiji Corrections Services Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa has stated that former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama did not make any unauthorized calls from his mobile phone while incarcerated. This confirmation came on Friday following allegations that Bainimarama made phone calls from the Nasinu Correction Centre.

Dr. Nakarawa emphasized, “There have been no calls.” He explained that although the SIM card was analyzed, no phone calls were detected. Additionally, the police cybercrime unit conducted an assessment but found no evidence of any outgoing calls.

Last month, the Fiji Corrections Service released a statement indicating that a comprehensive investigation was conducted regarding the authorized use of Bainimarama’s mobile phone. The High Court had permitted Bainimarama to use the device to monitor his pacemaker app.

Bainimarama is currently serving a one-year prison sentence after being convicted for attempting to pervert the course of justice related to an incident involving the University of the South Pacific.
