Bainimarama’s Phone Controversy: What Really Happened?

Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, who is currently incarcerated, did not make any unauthorized calls from his mobile phone, as confirmed by Fiji Corrections Services Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa. This statement was made on Friday in response to allegations that Bainimarama had made phone calls while at the Nasinu Correction Centre.

Dr. Nakarawa stated, “There have been no calls. The SIM card was there, so we sent it for analysis but there have been no calls established. The police cybercrime unit came to take it, but they could not find any outside calls.”

Last month, the Fiji Corrections Services had released a statement indicating that a comprehensive investigation was conducted regarding the authorized use of Bainimarama’s mobile phone. The High Court had permitted Bainimarama to use the phone to monitor his pacemaker app.

Bainimarama is serving a one-year sentence after being convicted of attempting to pervert the course of justice related to an issue involving the University of the South Pacific.
