Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is now eligible to apply for early release, joining other inmates in a similar position. This clarification comes from Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa following the announcement that Bainimarama has been granted early release, effective Friday, in accordance with Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act.
Bainimarama was sentenced to 12 months in prison in May for his role in perverting the course of justice, serving six months thus far. His early release has prompted inquiries from the public about the reasoning behind this decision. Commissioner Nakarawa confirmed that early release is part of standard procedures for inmates, stating, “Inmates do apply for early release and in this case Mr. Bainimarama did.”
He emphasized that the decision was not influenced by current Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who remarked that such releases are part of the legal process. Rabuka noted, “I did not request for this early release… It is a normal thing to happen. It is part of the processes of the law.”
Moreover, the Fiji Corrections Service stated that Bainimarama’s application went through a detailed review process in alignment with the criteria set out in the Corrections Act, which aims to prioritize community safety while facilitating the reintegration of inmates into society. The service confirmed that all necessary criteria, including eligibility and release conditions, were thoroughly examined and met.
Looking ahead, the Fiji Corrections Service will continue to monitor Bainimarama’s reintegration to ensure compliance with the conditions of his release. This process highlights the commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and successful reintegration as outlined in the Corrections Act.
As this situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of rehabilitation and the pathways available for reintegrating individuals back into society, which can ultimately foster hope and opportunities for change.
