Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is now eligible to apply for early release, following the regulations in place for inmates. Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa confirmed this announcement, stating that Bainimarama’s early release is effective as of Friday under Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act.

Bainimarama is currently serving a 12-month sentence for perverting the course of justice, having completed six months of his term. This development has prompted public inquiries into the reasons behind his early release. However, Commissioner Nakarawa clarified that this is a routine procedure available to all incarcerated individuals. Bainimarama submitted his application for early release, which was then reviewed and approved by the board.

Nakarawa dismissed rumors suggesting that the early release was influenced by current Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Rabuka himself addressed the media, describing the early release as “the law in action” and emphasized that he did not request it. He mentioned that he had hoped for a reconciliation but did not intervene in the legal processes.

The Fiji Corrections Service explained that the decision was made after a thorough evaluation of Bainimarama’s application, in compliance with the legal framework governing early release practices. They assured that all necessary eligibility criteria, release conditions, and supervision measures were carefully assessed and met.

The FCS is committed to overseeing Bainimarama’s reintegration, ensuring that he adheres to the stipulated release conditions. This decision reflects the FCS’s dedication to justice, rehabilitation, and proper reintegration of inmates into society as mandated by the Corrections Act.

This move can be seen as an opportunity for healing and more inclusive governance in Fiji, as Bainimarama’s reintegration could play a significant role in the nation’s journey toward reconciliation and unity.

Overall, this process demonstrates the importance of upholding legal standards while also focusing on reintegration for former offenders, which can lead to a more harmonious society.
