Bail Hearing Postponed for Former Minister Amid Scandal

The request for bail variation by former Minister for Fisheries and Forests Kalaveti Ravu, allowing him to travel to China, has been postponed until next Monday. The court did not convene today due to the Magistrate falling ill. Ravu faces a charge of abuse of office, while Regional Manager North Tekata Toaisi is charged with aiding and abetting this abuse. The allegations assert that between July 25 and August 31, 2023, Ravu intervened in a Ministry of Forestry investigation concerning the illegal trade of banned beche-de-mer species. It is claimed that Toaisi assisted Ravu in committing the abuse of office. Ravu has previously pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case will be revisited on October 7 for the bail variation hearing.
