A former accountant of the Fiji Rugby Union and his partner have been released on bail by the Suva Magistrates Court. They had been held in custody overnight until their case was brought before Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza.

Pawan Deo and Subhashni Mudaliar face charges of conspiracy to defraud, obtaining a gain, and obtaining financial advantage. It is alleged that while operating Sports Supplies Limited and with Deo working as the financial accountant for the FRU, the couple conspired to wrongfully acquire $53,788.75 from the organization.

The alleged offenses took place between February 1 and July 31, 2022. Additionally, they are accused of fraudulently facilitating payments to Sports Supplies Limited, resulting in the company receiving $7,291.83, which it was not entitled to receive, between February 1 and May 11, 2022.

FICAC prosecutor Mary Takinana did not oppose the grant of bail. Magistrate Hamza instructed the accused to avoid any reoffending. They are required to surrender their travel documents and report to the FICAC Headquarters monthly.

The case has been adjourned until November 5 for the next phase of disclosures.
