Bail Denied for Alleged Mass Murderer: What’s Next for Kapawale?

Tevita Kapawale, who is facing multiple charges including five counts of murder, has had his bail application rejected by the Suva High Court. During the hearing presided over by Justice Dane Tuiqereqere, Kapawale is accused of the alleged murders of three Indonesians and two Fijians aboard the FV Tiro 2 in Fiji waters on May 18, 2021, following a confrontation among crew members.

This marks the second attempt by Kapawale to secure bail, during which he argued that being released would allow him to work and support his family. However, Justice Tuiqereqere denied the request, noting Kapawale’s failure to appear in court on two separate occasions. Although Kapawale later surrendered to authorities after a bench warrant was issued, the judge emphasized that this did not excuse his previous absences.

The trial for this case has been set for January. Justice Tuiqereqere expressed concerns regarding the likelihood of Kapawale returning for trial if granted bail. While he acknowledged the principle of presumed innocence, he stressed the gravity of the alleged crimes and the substantial evidence against him. It was noted that if convicted of murder, Kapawale could face a life sentence.
