The bail decision for former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum is expected to be announced today. Sayed-Khaiyum appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamza yesterday morning.
The State Counsel requested additional time to submit a supplementary affidavit from a senior Urologist to provide a different perspective on Sayed-Khaiyum’s medical condition. In response, Magistrate Hamza indicated that Sayed-Khaiyum’s lawyer, Davenesh Sharma, would also need time to address this application.
Sharma opposed the request, asserting that the State was advised of the affidavit on July 15 and had ample time to prepare. Magistrate Hamza then informed the court that her bail ruling would be delivered the following day.
This case involves a request for a bail variation made by the defense to permit Sayed-Khaiyum to travel to Singapore for medical treatment. He is facing charges of abuse of office for allegedly authorizing government payment of taxes for former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem without the necessary approval from the Constitutional Offices Commission and the President.
