Bail Bid Delayed for Ex-Minister Amid Serious Charges

Spread the love

The request for bail modification by former Fisheries and Forests Minister Kalaveti Ravu, seeking to travel to China, has been postponed until next Monday. The court proceedings did not take place today due to the Magistrate’s illness.

Ravu faces a single count of abuse of office, while Regional Manager North Tekata Toaisi is charged with aiding and abetting Ravu’s alleged misconduct. The charges stem from accusations that between July 25, 2023, and August 31, 2023, Ravu obstructed a legitimate investigation by the Ministry of Forestry concerning the illegal trade of prohibited beche-de-mer species.

Toaisi is alleged to have assisted Ravu in committing the abuse of office. Ravu has previously entered a not guilty plea. The case is scheduled to resume on October 7 for the bail variation hearing.
