The Fijian Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has opposed managing director of Carpenters Fiji, Daniel Whippy’s request for bail variation to obtain medical treatment. Whippy faces a charge for allegedly counseling the commission of an offense. He appeared in court with co-defendant John O’Connor, the former CEO of the National Fire Authority, who is charged with abuse of office.
Both individuals are accused of altering the findings from an investigation into a warehouse fire that occurred in April 2018. O’Connor allegedly instructed NFA officers to change the findings of their investigation report regarding the fire at Walu Bay “for purposes of gain,” while Whippy is accused of advising O’Connor in this misconduct.
Whippy is scheduled to return to court on October 28, while O’Connor’s next court appearance is set for January 13 of the following year.
