Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed that he has been inundated with heartfelt messages from Fijians who feel deeply saddened and disappointed by the recent announcement from the Mercy Commission regarding the pardon of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.
Lal noted that this decision has reopened old wounds for those who experienced significant loss, whether it involved family, livelihoods, businesses, or even forced them to leave Fiji for safety during those troubling times.
He acknowledged that the scars from the events of 2000 remain vivid for many, stating that he stands in solidarity with those affected, recognizing the considerable impact these events have had on their lives and the nation at large.
“As your representative, I must be candid—while I understand and share your concerns, we must face the reality of our situation, and I lack the authority to reverse or contest the decision made. Please know that I genuinely empathize with your pain. Although I cannot alter the past, I will persist in voicing your concerns and advocating for transparency and accountability within our coalition on behalf of every Fijian,” Lal stated.
