Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has announced that the Back-to-School Support payments for the 2025 academic year have been successfully processed and distributed ahead of schedule, allowing families an additional two and a half weeks to prepare for the new school year commencing on January 27, 2025. Originally scheduled for January 15, this early payout provides timely financial assistance to parents and guardians as they gear up for the academic year.
This year’s initiative saw a substantial number of applications, with a total of 208,673 submitted. Out of these, 200,176 applications were successfully processed, resulting in a significant payout totaling $40.4 million. Currently, 8,313 applications are on hold due to students awaiting Year-12 exam results, which are necessary for enrolling in Year-13.
Eligible families will receive $200 for each child, which is intended to help ease the financial burden associated with essential school expenses such as uniforms, school bags, shoes, and stationery. Parents can access these funds through digital platforms like MPAiSA and MyCASH, or at Post Fiji facilities. For families living in maritime areas, the funds can be collected at local Post Fiji agencies upon presenting a child’s student ID for verification.
This initiative is a vital part of the Coalition Government’s commitment to assist families, particularly those with household incomes under $50,000. Historically, the program has benefited around 200,000 students annually, with a total investment exceeding $130 million in educational assistance since its inception.
The early distribution of these funds not only alleviates the immediate financial pressures faced by families but also underscores the government’s dedication to promoting educational readiness. This initiative is a hopeful signal, enabling children to start their new academic year well-equipped and filled with opportunities.
The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education have expressed their sincere gratitude to school heads, teachers, and parents for their continuing support throughout the application process, highlighting the importance of community collaboration in uplifting education.
In summary, the timely rollout of the Back-to-School Support payments illustrates a strong commitment to educational accessibility and preparedness, paving the way for a brighter future for both students and their families.
