As families in Fiji prepare for the new academic year, the Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission (FCCC) is reminding consumers to remain vigilant and well-informed during this busy back-to-school shopping period. Chief Executive Joel Abraham stressed the significance of careful budgeting and planning, especially as many parents experience financial pressures while purchasing essential school supplies.
To maximize their spending, Abraham encourages parents to compare prices, select reputable retailers, and be cautious of misleading promotions. “This approach can help ensure that children have all the necessary supplies they need for the year ahead,” he noted.
The FCCC enforces strict pricing regulations for stationery and textbooks under the Counter Inflation (Price Control) (Stationery and Textbooks) (No.24) Order 1993. This regulation outlines permissible profit margins for wholesalers and retailers, ensuring fair pricing practices are upheld. To monitor compliance, the FCCC has conducted over 140 targeted inspections and surveillances focused specifically on back-to-school items.
A notable concern highlighted this year is the rise in scams related to school vouchers. These fraudulent offers can promise significant discounts or “free” supplies, often leading to financial losses for unsuspecting consumers. Abraham advised parents to verify the authenticity of such offers before sharing any personal or payment information.
Before purchasing, consumers are further encouraged to compare prices across various stores, scrutinize product labels for quality assurance, and understand return policies—particularly for electronics like calculators. If any instances of price gouging or unfair trading practices are suspected, consumers are urged to report these issues directly to the FCCC.
In summary, the FCCC aims to create a fair shopping environment to empower families as they gear up for the school year. By staying informed and vigilant, consumers not only protect themselves but also contribute to a marketplace that values ethical trading practices. This shared community effort promotes a positive atmosphere, ensuring a smooth and supportive transition into the academic year for all.
This proactive approach is commendable as it not only protects individual consumers but fosters a strong sense of community, allowing families to prepare for the school year with confidence and security amidst potential challenges.
