As the 2024 Skipper Cup approaches in February, Ba Rugby is adjusting its plans for the off-season by postponing trials and the selection of its representative squads. Discussions have emerged about Fiji Rugby potentially shifting its playing season to an August start in 2025, which has led Ba Rugby to pause the Battle of the Bridge trials until after the upcoming Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) Annual General Meeting (AGM).
BRU Secretary Gaby Kautoga expressed that the decision to delay these events was made to avoid unnecessary preparation for a schedule that may not materialize as planned. Kautoga noted, “We were about to waste a huge amount of time preparing for something that wasn’t going to happen as scheduled,” emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding the FRU’s decisions.
If the FRU confirms the new schedule at the AGM, Ba Rugby might have to reorganize its own season, with the possibility of hosting a 12-week club competition from late March to mid-June, followed by the Ba Industries Cup and Rooster Chicken Shield. Kautoga acknowledged the frustration resulting from the lack of clarity, stating that plans had been set based on earlier indications.
Despite the challenges, Ba Rugby remains adaptable and is prepared to align with whatever decisions are made at the FRU. The organization continues to focus on maintaining a competitive spirit and readiness for the upcoming rugby season.
While the situation may seem challenging at present, the proactive approach taken by Ba Rugby showcases its commitment to the sport and its athletes. With the potential for a revised calendar, there is hope that the adjustments can lead to an even more exciting and competitive rugby season ahead.
In summary, Ba Rugby is currently in a state of flux due to potential changes in the Fiji Rugby season, making it necessary to postpone trials and selections until further notice from the FRU AGM.
