In the heart of Dilkusha, Nausori, 12-year-old Ayaan Ravitesh Chand exemplifies strength and resilience. As the eldest of four children, he lives with his grandmother, Sunita Wati, and his two younger siblings.
Ayaan has become a source of inspiration for his family, demonstrating remarkable courage and love. His difficult journey began when he was just three years old during a visit from his grandmother. His mother, Preetika Priya Kumar, recalls, “He was a playful child, full of life and energy. It was during that visit in 2016 that we noticed Ayaan was having trouble breathing.”
Initially overlooked by local health centers, Ayaan’s condition deteriorated until an X-ray taken at Nakasi Health Centre confirmed he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). “When we arrived at CWM Hospital, the doctors told us he had only 24 percent oxygen in his body,” Preetika remembered, recounting their fear and determination to support Ayaan.
Thanks to the efforts of WOWS Kids Fiji, Ayaan received essential treatment. “They provided us with grocery vouchers and financial assistance,” expressed Preetika gratefully. “We couldn’t have done it without their help.” Despite facing challenging chemotherapy treatments, Ayaan fought valiantly, and by the end of 2016, he was free of leukemia, a victory that felt miraculous to him.
“He was too young to fully understand what he went through, but he was a warrior, and his strength inspired us all,” Preetika recounted. Throughout his treatment, Ayaan’s father was absent, but his maternal family consistently offered support. His grandmother, Sunita, along with his late grandfather, Anup Kumar, and an aunt, provided unwavering love.
“After losing my husband and daughter within six months last year, it was Ayaan who comforted me. After my husband passed away, he was my rock,” Sunita shared. Ayaan often helps out at home and cares deeply for his grandmother. “Even as a child, he was always worried about us. He truly is a special boy, kind and loving, always thinking of others,” she commented.
Today, Ayaan is thriving, taller than his grandmother and full of life. He enjoys cooking, drawing, and singing, often inspired by his late aunt. He experiments with new recipes for Sunita, who proudly notes, “He’s always eager to try new recipes and make me taste his creations!”
Ayaan is cherished by his teachers and classmates at Saraswati Primary School. Despite his challenging past, he carries himself with grace and empathy. Preetika underscores the importance of parents being vigilant about their children’s health, stating, “To all parents: always take care of your children when they’re sick. Don’t rely on others; it’s your responsibility.”
Ayaan’s journey from a sickly toddler to a vibrant young boy is a testament to the power of love, support, and resilience. As he continues to grow and thrive, his story serves as an inspiration to those around him, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, strength and hope can prevail.
