Ayaan’s Journey: From Illness to Inspiring Resilience

In the vibrant community of Dilkusha, Nausori, 12-year-old Ayaan Ravitesh Chand stands as a symbol of strength and resilience. As the eldest of four siblings, he lives with his grandmother, Sunita Wati, and two younger siblings.

Despite facing significant challenges, Ayaan has become a source of inspiration for his family, showcasing bravery and love. His journey began at the tender age of three when he experienced troubling breathing issues during a visit from his grandmother.

“He was a joyful child, brimming with energy,” reminisces his mother, Preetika Priya Kumar. “It was during that 2016 visit that we first recognized Ayaan was having trouble breathing.”

Initially overlooked by local health facilities, Ayaan’s health rapidly declined until an X-ray at Nakasi Health Centre unveiled the grim reality—he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

“When we got to CWM Hospital, the doctors informed us he had only 24 percent oxygen in his body,” Preetika recalls. “We were frightened, but we knew we had to fight for him.”

Thanks to the support of WOWS Kids Fiji, Ayaan received the essential treatments he needed. “They provided us with grocery vouchers and financial assistance,” Preetika expresses her gratitude. “We wouldn’t have made it without their help.”

Though chemotherapy posed great difficulties, Ayaan faced the challenge with remarkable courage. By the close of 2016, he celebrated a significant milestone—being leukemia-free, a moment that felt miraculous for his young heart.

“He was too young to truly comprehend what he had endured,” his mother recalls. “But he was a warrior, and his unwavering strength motivated us all.”

While Ayaan’s father was absent during his treatment, his maternal family consistently supported him. His grandmother, Sunita, along with his late grandfather Anup Kumar and an aunt, provided him with endless love and encouragement.

“After losing my husband and daughter within six months last year, it was Ayaan who consoled me. After my husband’s passing, he became my anchor,” Sunita shares. Ayaan often helps around the house and cares deeply for his grandmother.

“Even as a child, he always worried about us. He is truly a remarkable boy—kind and loving, always considering others,” she adds.

Today, Ayaan is thriving. Taller than his grandmother and full of energy, he enjoys cooking, drawing, and singing. Drawing inspiration from his late aunt, he tries out new recipes for Sunita, who proudly shares, “He’s always eager to experiment with new dishes and make me taste his creations!”

Ayaan is cherished by both his teachers and classmates at Saraswati Primary School. Despite a challenging past, he carries himself with grace and compassion. Preetika emphasizes the importance of parental vigilance regarding children’s health, stating, “To all parents: always take care of your children when they’re unwell. Don’t depend on others; it’s your responsibility.”

Ayaan’s transformation from a frail toddler to a spirited young boy highlights the power of love, support, and resilience. As he continues to flourish, his journey serves as an inspiration to those around him, reminding everyone that strength and hope can shine through even the toughest times.
