Ayaan’s Journey: From Illness to Inspirational Resilience

In the bustling area of Dilkusha, Nausori, 12-year-old Ayaan Ravitesh Chand exemplifies strength and resilience. As the eldest of four siblings, he lives with his grandmother, Sunita Wati, and his two younger siblings. Amid the difficulties they face, Ayaan has become a beacon of hope for his family, exhibiting courage and love.

Ayaan’s journey began at the tender age of three during a visit from his grandmother. His mother, Preetika Priya Kumar, reminisces about Ayaan’s lively personality but recalls a concerning moment in 2016 when he began struggling to breathe. Initially brushed off by local health facilities, Ayaan’s condition deteriorated until an X-ray at Nakasi Health Centre revealed he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

“When we arrived at CWM Hospital, the doctors informed us he had only 24 percent oxygen in his body,” Preetika shared, highlighting the fear that enveloped their family. “We were terrified, but we had to fight for him.”

Ayaan received the crucial treatment he needed, thanks to the support of WOWS Kids Fiji, which provided grocery vouchers and financial assistance. “We couldn’t have done it without their help,” Preetika expressed gratefully.

The chemotherapy process was arduous, but Ayaan displayed remarkable bravery. By the end of 2016, he had overcome leukemia, a victory that felt miraculous to him as a young child. Preetika noted, “He was too young to fully understand what he went through, but he was a warrior, and his strength inspired us all.”

Through his treatment, Ayaan’s father was notably absent, but his maternal family stood steadfast by his side. His grandmother Sunita and his late grandfather, Anup Kumar, along with an aunt, provided unwavering love and support. Sunita reflected on the difficult times, saying, “After losing my husband and daughter within six months last year, it was Ayaan who comforted me. After my husband passed away, he was my rock.”

Despite his young age, Ayaan often helps around the house and shows immense care for his grandmother. Sunita remarked, “Even as a child, he was always worried about us. He truly is a special boy, kind and loving, always thinking of others.”

Today, Ayaan is thriving. Taller than his grandmother and full of energy, he enjoys cooking, drawing, and singing. Inspired by his late aunt, he experiments with new recipes for Sunita, who proudly states, “He’s always eager to try new recipes and make me taste his creations!”

Ayaan is cherished by both his teachers and classmates at Saraswati Primary School. Despite his challenging past, he carries himself with grace and empathy. Preetika emphasizes the need for parental vigilance regarding children’s health, urging all parents to take charge of their children’s well-being when they are sick.

Ayaan’s remarkable transformation from a sickly toddler to a vibrant young boy illustrates the power of love, support, and resilience. His inspiring story serves as a reminder that even in adversity, strength and hope can shine through.
