In the community of Dilkusha, Nausori, 12-year-old Ayaan Ravitesh Chand stands out as a symbol of strength and resilience. As the eldest of four siblings, he lives with his grandmother, Sunita Wati, and two younger brothers. Despite facing numerous challenges, Ayaan has become a source of hope for his family, showcasing remarkable courage and love.
Ayaan’s journey began at the tender age of three during a visit from his grandmother. His mother, Preetika Priya Kumar, recalls that he was a lively child full of energy. However, during that visit in 2016, they noticed he was having trouble breathing. Initially brushed off by local health centers, Ayaan’s condition deteriorated until an X-ray at Nakasi Health Centre revealed he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
“When we arrived at CWM Hospital, the doctors informed us that Ayaan only had 24 percent oxygen in his body,” Preetika said, remembering the fear that gripped their family. “We were scared, but we had to fight for him.”
Thanks to the support of WOWS Kids Fiji, Ayaan received the necessary treatment, which included grocery vouchers and financial assistance. Preetika expressed her gratitude, saying, “We couldn’t have done it without their help.”
Though chemotherapy was a difficult ordeal, Ayaan displayed immense bravery. By late 2016, he was leukemia-free, a moment that felt like a miracle to him. “He was too young to fully comprehend what he had gone through,” his mother explained, adding, “But he was a warrior, and his strength inspired us all.”
While Ayaan’s father was absent during his treatment, his maternal family remained steadfastly by his side. His grandmother, Sunita, along with his late grandfather Anup Kumar and an aunt, provided unwavering support and love. “After losing my husband and daughter within six months last year, it was Ayaan who comforted me. After my husband passed away, he was my rock,” Sunita shared.
Ayaan often assists with household chores and shows deep care for his grandmother. “Even as a child, he was always worried about us. He truly is a special boy — kind and loving, always thinking of others.”
Today, Ayaan is thriving, taller than his grandmother and full of vitality. He enjoys cooking, drawing, and singing. Inspired by his late aunt, he experiments with new recipes for Sunita, who proudly says, “He’s always eager to try new recipes and make me taste his creations!”
Ayaan is cherished by his teachers and classmates at Saraswati Primary School. Despite his difficult upbringing, he carries himself with grace and empathy. Preetika highlights the importance of parental awareness regarding children’s health: “To all parents: always take care of your children when they’re sick. Don’t rely on others; it’s your responsibility.”
Ayaan’s transformation from a fragile toddler to a vibrant young boy is a powerful testament to love, support, and resilience. As he continues to blossom, his story serves as an inspiration to those around him, reminding everyone that even amidst adversity, strength and hope can triumph.
