The aviation sector in the Pacific region is crucial, as the island nations rely on dependable and efficient air transport to maintain global connections, enhance tourism, and foster economic growth. This was emphasized by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Minister for Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka during the inauguration of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) Liaison Office in Nadi on Friday.
Mr. Gavoka stated that the new office symbolizes the region’s steadfast commitment to tackling the unique challenges it faces while promoting sustainable development in aviation. He warmly welcomed the chief guest, ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, highlighting his presence as an important endorsement of the initiative.
He remarked on the significance of their collaboration and said that the establishment of the ICAO regional office in Nadi is a clear indication of a collective determination to enhance aviation safety, security, and sustainability.
“This office will act as a central point for communication, technical assistance, and capacity building tailored to the needs of the Pacific’s PSIDS,” he added. Furthermore, Mr. Gavoka pointed out that the Pacific is particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change, making it essential for aviation practices to align with global sustainability objectives.
He expressed confidence that the liaison office will become a symbol of progress, collaboration, and innovation in the aviation sector.
