During the 3rd Regional Aviation Ministers Meeting (RAMM3) held in Suva, Forum Secretary General Baron Divavesi Waqa highlighted the essential role of aviation in supporting the economies of Pacific island nations. He framed aviation not merely as a transportation method but as a crucial lifeline for the region’s economic future.
Waqa addressed the assembly of aviation ministers from across the Pacific, stressing the importance of increased connectivity amid rising geopolitical tensions and the ongoing threats posed by climate change. “This is a pivotal moment in our region’s history,” Waqa stated, acknowledging the unique challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Pacific nations.
He pointed out the growing competition for influence within the Pacific region and the urgent climate crisis endangering the livelihoods of its inhabitants. These concerns were echoed by Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka, who emphasized the need for regional collaboration to tackle aviation challenges and embrace new opportunities.
In his speech, Waqa called for a collective approach to development, urging attendees to move beyond isolated discussions to include various sectors such as trade, health, and aviation in their collaborative efforts. He referenced the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent as a framework designed to promote enhanced cooperation and address the interconnected challenges facing the region.
Waqa expressed optimism about potential collaboration aimed at making aviation more accessible and affordable, particularly for smaller island nations. He stressed that a robust aviation sector is vital for economic advancement and for fostering sustainable tourism, both critical components of the region’s development.
The RAMM3 meeting, hosted by the Fiji Government, seeks not only to resolve current issues but also to lay a solid groundwork for future advancements in aviation. The positive outlook from participants reflects a united commitment among Pacific nations to improve regional connectivity and drive economic growth through enhanced aviation infrastructure and strategic partnerships.
