The aviation sector in the Pacific region is essential as the islands rely on dependable and efficient air transport for global connectivity, tourism promotion, and economic growth.
This was emphasized by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Minister for Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka during the inauguration of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) Liaison Office in Nadi on Friday.
Mr. Gavoka stated that the office represents the region’s strong commitment to tackling the unique challenges it faces and to promoting sustainable development in aviation.
He extended a warm welcome to the chief guest, ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, highlighting the significance of this initiative.
“Your support and participation are invaluable as we embark on this new chapter of collaboration and progress,” he remarked.
The establishment of the ICAO regional office in Nadi reflects a collective determination to enhance aviation safety, security, and sustainability.
“This office will act as a hub for communication, technical assistance, and capacity building to address the Pacific needs for PSIDS,” Mr. Gavoka noted.
He also pointed out that the Pacific is particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change, making it crucial for aviation practices to align with global sustainability objectives.
Mr. Gavoka expressed confidence that the office would become a symbol of progress, collaboration, and innovation.
