Auvray eyes defensive return as Bula FC braces for OFC Pro League semi vs Vanuatu United

Extra Bula FC head coach Stephane Auvray has signalled a potential tactical rethink ahead of today’s do-or-die OFC Pro League semifinal playoff against Vanuatu United, indicating his side may revert to a tighter, more defensive setup to protect their path into the last four.

Auvray, the French coach in charge of Bula, said the team’s recent run of three gruelling Leaders Group matches forced a shift in emphasis that left the defence more vulnerable than earlier in the competition. “We’ve been very, very strong on defence, and we decided to be a little more offensive-minded,” he said, acknowledging that while the attacking play produced positives, it “may have created a little more space behind us by attacking.”

The coach described today's game as a must-win fixture and suggested practicality will guide his selection and game plan against the Vanuatu side. “We played really well, but we may have created a little more space behind us by attacking,” Auvray said. “We may have to come back to something a little more pragmatic for that game.”

The match kicks off at 3pm and will be shown live on FBC2. With a place in the OFC Pro League semi-finals at stake, the result will determine whether Bula’s campaign extends or ends at the playoff stage. Auvray’s comments make clear that preserving defensive shape will be a priority as he seeks to balance the team’s recent attacking momentum with the risk of conceding crucial chances.

Bula’s season to date, Auvray noted, has been built around strong defensive foundations that underpinned earlier success in the tournament. The coach’s warning that the team’s recent offensive tilt opened exploitable gaps underlines the tactical choices facing him: press for goals and risk counter-attacks, or steady the backline and seek a controlled path to victory.

The outcome of today’s encounter will be the latest chapter in Bula’s OFC Pro League campaign and a test of Auvray’s decision to potentially reinstate a more conservative approach. Fans and neutrals can watch the tactical battle unfold live on FBC2 from 3pm.
