Authorities Sound Alarm Over Mysterious Yacht Activity in Fiji

Authorities in Fiji are facing difficulties in responding to concerns regarding unusual yacht movements, according to Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew. He highlighted that a significant challenge is the lag in receiving information from local villagers about yachts involved in potentially suspicious activities.

“Villages often inform us a week or two after these incidents take place,” Mr. Chew explained. He noted that this problem exists not only in Vanua Levu but is widespread across Fiji. “If you provide that information promptly, it will enable us to respond more effectively,” he added.

Recently, residents of Vaturova in Cakaudrove have observed yachts drifting closer to their shores, as well as a notable increase in the presence of rental cars coinciding with the arrival of these vessels.

“We are doing our utmost to address these challenges,” Mr. Chew stated. To improve their response to the unusual maritime traffic, the Saqani Police Post has been equipped with a new fiber boat to enhance coastal patrol efforts.

This new vessel is intended to extend coverage from coastal areas up to Udu, allowing for better monitoring and quick responses to incidents at sea. “The introduction of this fiber boat will greatly enhance our ability to patrol coastal regions and ensure a more visible police presence at sea,” remarked Mr. Chew.

He also emphasized the importance of involving stakeholders and local communities in monitoring and securing Fiji’s coastal areas.
