Allison Haworth West, president of the Australia-Fiji Business Council, expressed her disappointment regarding the absence of Australian Government representation at the Fiji-Australia and Australia-Fiji Business Councils Joint Forum, taking place at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. She emphasized that businesses are vital in creating integrated links and relationships that can yield benefits for both nations.
West noted that the week is significant for the Pacific region due to the ongoing Pacific Island Forum in Tonga, which has led to a schedule conflict for many Australian political leaders. Despite efforts by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the High Commission, attendance from senior Australian politicians remains low.
She stressed the importance of in-person connections, stating that while Australia has demonstrated strong public policies towards Fiji and the Pacific, the spirit of “Vuvale” underscores the necessity of face-to-face interactions. West urged the Australian Government to recognize the significance of direct engagement, alongside financial support through aid, grants, and loans.
She highlighted that the discussions at the Forum will be crucial in fostering business opportunities, promoting prosperity, and enhancing societal wellbeing, all of which are essential for the economic growth of both countries.
