Australia Takes Stand Against Seasonal Worker Abuse

Any instance of abuse towards seasonal workers in Australia is deemed unacceptable and will be addressed promptly. This statement was made by Pat Conroy, the Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific, during a press conference in Tonga yesterday. He responded to concerns regarding the mistreatment of workers participating in the seasonal PALM scheme. Conroy acknowledged Australia’s longstanding relationship with Pacific workers and stressed that participation in the scheme is voluntary, as countries have full control over their workforce sent to Australia. Mr. Conroy is currently in Tonga for the 53rd Pacific Island Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting.
