The Australian Government has chosen Johnstaff International Development to implement the master plan for the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital, in collaboration with GHD, Silver Thomas Hanley, and International SOS Australia.
During the announcement, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong, expressed appreciation for the dedicated health professionals in Fiji, emphasizing their vital contributions to the community. She stated, “In Australia, we believe that healthcare is a birthright for every citizen, regardless of their background, and the people of Fiji share this belief. When Fiji asked for our support to improve its healthcare through a master plan for this hospital, we listened, and we acted.”
Senator Wong highlighted the historical significance of the CWM Hospital, which has been serving the community for over a century, while announcing the selection of Johnstaff International Development after a competitive procurement process. She noted the pressing need for improvements in health services and expressed the commitment to conduct an urgent engineering assessment of the existing hospital structures to ensure they continue to serve the Fijian people during the development of the master plan.
Australia remains committed to strengthening its partnership with Fiji, with a focus on enhancing services, creating inclusive opportunities, and promoting peace and prosperity in the region. “Our Vuvale partnership is built on a foundation of trust and respect and is a partnership of equals,” added Wong.
In response, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed deep gratitude to the Australian Government for its generous funding of the CWM Hospital redevelopment. He acknowledged the hospital’s historical significance, honoring Fijian soldiers who fought for global peace during the war. As part of the hospital’s design, the names of these brave individuals are prominently displayed at the main entrance, ensuring their sacrifices are remembered.
Rabuka stated, “This partnership highlights the significant progress we are making together and will be shared worldwide to highlight the importance of our collaboration.”
