Australia Pledges $400 Million to Strengthen Pacific Policing Initiative

Australia is set to invest around $400 million over the next five years to support the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI), aimed at fulfilling the goals of Pacific nations, according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Upon arriving in Tonga on Tuesday evening, Mr. Albanese joined other Pacific leaders to endorse the PPI, which seeks to enhance regional peace and security across the Pacific. The initiative is designed to strengthen the ability of Pacific countries to address law enforcement and internal security needs while providing mutual support during emergencies.

“This policing initiative builds upon the long-standing cooperation among Pacific police forces, enhancing regional stability and offering assistance in times of need,” Mr. Albanese stated. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among Pacific leaders to achieve a shared vision, noting that improved capability and cooperation among police forces will benefit all Pacific nations and their communities’ safety.

The PPI will focus on three main components: the establishment of up to four regional police Training Centres of Excellence in the Pacific, which will provide specialized training and operational support; the formation of the Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG), a collective of trained police personnel ready to assist Pacific nations during significant events or crises; and the creation of a PPI Policing Development and Coordination Hub in Brisbane, offering advanced training facilities and preparation for PPSG deployments.

Mr. Albanese highlighted that Australia’s funding will cover infrastructure costs associated with the new policing Centres of Excellence in the area. The initiative is seen as a pivotal step towards achieving the Pacific Islands Forum’s vision for peace and security articulated in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, building on the experiences of the Solomon Islands International Assistance Force.

Initial discussions about developing an integrated regional policing capability took place at the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police meeting earlier in 2023.
