Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong is currently visiting Fiji to participate in the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Foreign Ministers Meeting in Suva. This marks Wong’s fifth trip to Fiji in her capacity as Foreign Minister, underscoring the Australian Government’s commitment to its significant and lasting relationship with Fiji and the wider Pacific region.
Senator Wong stated that the PIF meeting provides an opportunity to share ideas and collaborate, embodying the principles of the Pacific Way, to address common issues such as climate change, regional security, and economic growth.
“Australia is committed to a vision of a peaceful, stable, prosperous, and united region, with the Pacific Islands Forum at its center. Together, we will advance the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, enhancing connectivity and resilience across the region,” she said.
The discussion will also include Australia’s bid to host the COP31 Climate Change Conference in cooperation with Pacific Island nations, aiming to highlight the urgent effects of climate change on the region and stimulate global action.
Notably, Australia’s Ambassador for First Nations People, Justin Mohamed, is accompanying Wong to the PIF meeting for the first time, enhancing the representation of First Nations perspectives and strengthening ties within the PIF community.
During her stay in Suva, Senator Wong will visit the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, an essential part of Fiji’s healthcare system, and participate in the announcement of the chosen contractor for the hospital’s infrastructure master plan.
