Australia and Fiji Join Forces to Tackle Drug Challenges

Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Penny Wong, emphasized the importance of collaboration with Fiji to tackle challenges like the escalating drug issue. During her visit this week, she announced the successful tender for the redevelopment of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital and participated in the Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting.

Wong highlighted the principle of Vuvale, which signifies working as equal partners. “I would not come here to dictate our actions. Instead, we engage with you on programs and issues prioritized by your government and people, as you seek our support,” she noted.

She assured that Australia will continue to aid the Fiji Police Force in various areas, including intelligence and digital forensics. “Our bilateral and regional programs focus on strengthening law enforcement efforts against drug production and trafficking, as well as providing broader support to address the social impacts of drug use,” Wang stated.

Additionally, she mentioned Australia’s commitment to delivering police command centers and providing training for police in intelligence, digital forensics, and enhanced collaboration on complex transnational investigations.
