Secretary of Defence Lloyd J. Austin III is set to embark on a significant trip this week, visiting Fiji, Australia, the Philippines, and Laos for a series of crucial bilateral and multilateral meetings. This journey underscores the U.S. commitment to reinforcing alliances and partnerships in support of a vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

During this, his twelfth official visit to the area, Secretary Austin will first stop in Darwin, Australia, where he will engage in multilateral discussions with regional allies and meet U.S. Marines from the Marine Rotational Force-Darwin. Following Australia, he will travel to the Philippines for his fourth visit, aiming to further security initiatives in collaboration with Philippine leaders and U.S. and Philippine forces.

In Laos, Secretary Austin will be participating in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM)-Plus on November 21. Here, he plans to reaffirm the U.S. dedication to ASEAN centrality during an informal meeting with ASEAN counterparts and outline potential areas for future collaboration.

The trip will conclude in Fiji, representing a historic moment as it marks the first visit by a U.S. Secretary of Defence to the nation. Secretary Austin is scheduled to meet with key Fijian leaders to enhance the bilateral defence relationship.
