Audit Backlog: Will iTaukei Affairs Board Step Up?

The iTaukei Affairs Board has not undergone an audit since 2008. The Office of the Auditor-General has reached out to the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs for assistance in obtaining the board’s financial statements. During a presentation to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts regarding the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Audit Reports for the General Administration Sector, Auditor-General Finau Nagera stated that the last completed audit for the iTaukei Affairs Board was for the year 2007.

“We are expecting the draft financial statement for 2008,” said Nagera, noting that 2007 represented the most recent audited financial statement. She emphasized the need for the 2008 and subsequent draft financial statements to be submitted for audit.

In contrast, provincial councils have made progress in providing their financial statements. Nagera explained that a project to update audits for provincial councils commenced a few years ago.

“We are now in the new financial year, which started on August 1, 2024. We have planned a five-year audit for each provincial council, covering the years 2019 to 2022,” she said. “This involves approximately 56 draft financial statements that we need to manage this financial year.”

Nagera expressed optimism that the audits for provincial councils would be updated by the next financial year, highlighting the progress made in auditing for 2023-2024.

She remarked that the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs holds a supervisory role in ensuring the financial statements for the iTaukei Affairs Board are submitted. “We are looking to the ministry for assistance in this regard, given their oversight responsibilities,” she added. “We hope the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs Board will submit several accounts this financial year to facilitate our auditing process.”
