Auckland FC opened their Leaders Group account with a 2-0 win over Fiji’s Bula FC at Eden Park on the second match day of the mini-tournament, overturning the result of their earlier meeting in Ba and dealing the Fijians a second straight setback. The victory lifts Auckland onto three points alongside South Island United and South Melbourne FC, while Bula remain pointless and still without a goal from their two fixtures in Auckland.

The contest was settled in the first half. Jonty Bidois opened his Pro League account in the seventh minute, latching onto a low cross from Everton O’Leary after Scott Wara slipped inside the box to create the opening. The goal came after a nervy opening period for Bula, who repeatedly struggled to break Auckland’s high press and were punished by sloppy passes and turnovers in their own half.

Auckland extended their lead in the 36th minute when O’Leary turned provider into goalscorer, combining with Bidois before drilling a strike into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area. The two-goal cushion reflected Auckland’s sharper transitions and greater composure in the final third, while Bula’s promising moments went begging.

Bula did have chances. A midfield interception by Emiliano Tade set up Matt Ellis to drive a low effort across goal, and a free-kick delivery from the left ricocheted off the crossbar after a flick-on inside the box. Goalkeeper Oscar Mason was forced into two strong saves to deny Thomas Dunn and Nabil Begg, keeping the scoreline at 2-0 heading into the break.

The second half lost some of its flow and clear-cut opportunities were scarce. Bula coach Stéphane Auvray introduced three changes on the hour mark in an attempt to shift momentum, but his side could not convert pressure into goals. Auckland’s substitutes, including Dejaun Naidoo and Daniel Normann, had wayward attempts that failed to add to the tally as both teams settled for the status quo.

The result has immediate consequences for both teams’ Leaders Group campaigns. Auckland now prepare to face local rivals South Island United in their next fixture, while Bula must find points against South Melbourne on Tuesday at the same Eden Park venue to keep hopes of avoiding a play-off with the Challengers Group winner alive. The performance will also reignite concerns Auvray raised after previous defeats — costly errors and missed chances have repeatedly undermined Bula’s efforts, and those lapses were again decisive in Auckland.
