At 74, One Woman’s Unstoppable Quest to Give Back

At 74 years old, while many look forward to retirement, Sabita Gandhi continues to feel she has much to offer society. A dedicated social worker, she views helping others as her life’s purpose and calling.

Ms. Gandhi was raised with the inspirational teachings of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of humanity. Her interest in social work and volunteerism blossomed during her youth, a time marked by simplicity and challenges. Growing up, her parents faced financial struggles, which deeply influenced her values.

Her grandmother, a wise matriarch, served as a guiding figure in her life. Through stories revealing the hardships of the Girmit era, Ms. Gandhi learned that compassion is essential and a vital support for many.

“I was born in Navua and moved to Samabula, Suva in 1956 when my dad was transferred to work for Telecom,” she shared. “I grew up in Namuka St, Samabula, in a family of seven siblings, all living together with extended family.”

Despite limited resources, Ms. Gandhi’s upbringing was filled with love, and she was taught to cherish family, kindness, and respect. Her drive to assist the less fortunate is deeply rooted in her faith, cultural beliefs, and a strong sense of community.

Balancing her domestic responsibilities, Ms. Gandhi dedicates her time to social causes, particularly through the Poor Relief Society, a non-governmental organization. She participates in meetings with other NGOs, engages in social events, and offers support to those in need.

“I enjoy spending time with family, assisting the needy, and reconnecting with friends,” she said.

Though she feels the effects of aging, Ms. Gandhi remains determined to continue her work. She hopes to further assist the underprivileged, promote education, and raise awareness about health issues.

When time permits, she finds joy in listening to classic Hindi songs and watching movies to stay grounded and balanced. As she reflects on life, she embraces the mantra that true wealth is found not in material possessions, but in what we give to others.

“Stay positive in life, have faith, and believe in your goals,” she advises.
