At the age of 74, while many are enjoying their retirement, Sabita Gandhi remains dedicated to serving her community. A passionate social worker, Ms. Gandhi views helping others as her life’s mission and purpose.

Having grown up with the teachings of hard work and compassion, Ms. Gandhi’s interest in social work began in her youth, a time when her family faced economic challenges. She recalls her parents’ struggles to provide for their family, which left a lasting impression on her. Her grandmother served as an influential figure in her life, sharing stories of hardships during the Girmit era and instilling the belief that compassion is essential for survival.

Born in Navua and later moving to Samabula, Suva in 1956 when her father got a job with Telecom, Ms. Gandhi grew up in a large family where love, kindness, and respect were the core values, despite their modest means.

Her commitment to helping the less fortunate stems from a deep-rooted faith, cultural beliefs, and a collective spirit to assist those in need within her community. In addition to managing her household, she dedicates her time to the Poor Relief Society, a non-governmental organization where she actively participates in meetings, social events, and outreach to those who are ill or in need.

Ms. Gandhi cherishes her time spent with family and friends while also devoting herself to charitable causes. Despite the challenges of aging, she is determined to continue her work and aims to support education and raise awareness about health issues among vulnerable populations.

In her moments of leisure, she finds joy in listening to classic Hindi songs and watching films, which helps her maintain a sense of balance in life. Through these experiences, she reminds herself that true wealth comes not from what we possess, but rather from what we share with others.

“Stay positive, have faith, and believe in your aspirations,” Ms. Gandhi encourages, embodying the spirit of giving back to the community.
