A man has been found guilty of assaulting another individual and making threats against his life. On November 29, 2024, Nadi Magistrate Talei Kean ruled against Abrar Khan, convicting him of common assault and criminal intimidation stemming from an incident that took place on June 22, 2020.
Court documents reveal that the victim, Aminiasi Nadriwa, was with a companion gathering coconuts when the attack occurred. As Mr. Nadriwa was preparing to climb a coconut tree, Khan struck him twice in the stomach and then lunged at him with a knife. Fortunately, Mr. Nadriwa managed to flee the scene and reported the assault to the authorities with his father’s assistance.
In her ruling, Magistrate Kean stated, “From all the evidence and facts in totality, I find that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt the charges against the accused for both counts.”
Khan now has 28 days to file an appeal against the court’s decision.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking justice and protecting oneself from violence. The prompt action taken by the victim in reporting the incident is commendable, demonstrating that taking a stand can lead to accountability for harmful behaviors. There remains hope that communities can work together to ensure safety and prevent such incidents in the future.
