This week, the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference is set to focus on both the progress made and the challenges that remain in achieving gender equality in the region. Representatives from 12 Pacific governments, alongside civil society organizations, will convene in Bangkok, Thailand, with Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya attending the discussions.

Delphine Serumaga, the UN Women Fiji representative, emphasized the significance of the Asia Pacific Ministerial Meeting on the Beijing +30 Review, stating it presents an important opportunity to amplify Pacific voices and reaffirm commitments to gender equality on an international platform. She highlighted the powerful role the Pacific plays in continuing to fulfill the commitments established three decades ago, with collective efforts driving ongoing progress in this area.

Furthermore, a statement from UN Women Fiji notes the collaboration of leaders, advocates, and policymakers to ensure that the unique needs, experiences, and aspirations of Pacific women and girls are prominently represented globally. Fiji’s endorsement of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA) in 1995 marked its commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering all women and girls.

Earlier this year, Ms. Tabuya informed Parliament that the BPfA process offers Fiji a chance to conduct a national review on 12 crucial areas, such as inclusive development, social protection, and the prevention of violence.

The conference is a vital gathering that underscores the continued dedication to gender parity in the region, fostering a hopeful perspective on the advancements that can be made through collaboration and commitment to change.

Summary: The Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference this week will address gender equality, with 12 Pacific governments and civil society organizations participating. Lynda Tabuya from Fiji will attend, emphasizing the importance of national and regional commitments to gender empowerment. Delphine Serumaga from UN Women highlighted this opportunity for Pacific voices to influence global discussions. The conference builds on Fiji’s support for the Beijing Declaration aimed at fostering gender equality.
