A large mural measuring 19 by 4 meters, dedicated to conservation and sustainability, was unveiled in Suva last week in celebration of World Environment Health Day. The artwork, created by local artists Jack Eastgate, Hefrani Barnes, and Mele Nabola, is part of the “Art for Change” initiative, a collaboration between Greenhouse Coworking and the Agence française de développement (AFD) Group.
Maria Ronna Luna Pastorizo-Sekiguchi, founder of Greenhouse Coworking and The Greenhouse Studio, emphasized the transformative power of art and creativity through partnerships. “Art can convey messages, change perspectives, and motivate action—this is visual storytelling at its finest,” she remarked. She also expressed enthusiasm for the involvement of local artists in their initiative, stating that the AFD Group recognizes the potential of art as a driving force for change.
The AFD Group is a French public organization committed to funding and managing significant projects globally while focusing on sustainable development aligned with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In the Pacific region, their efforts are geared towards mitigating climate change impacts, enhancing the resilience of Pacific islands and their populations, and protecting biodiversity.
Elodie Vitalis, AFD Group representative in Fiji, conveyed pride in collaborating with Greenhouse Coworking to promote awareness of conservation and climate change. She noted that this initiative perfectly reflects the joint values and priorities of both organizations, including climate change, conservation, and human development. Vitalis highlighted the project’s role in supporting the training of two young female artists dedicated to fostering a sustainable future for Fiji.
The vibrant mural on the exterior wall of Greenhouse Coworking, located at the intersection of Des Voeux Rd and McGreggor Rd in Suva’s upper CBD, is intended to symbolize a hopeful vision for Fiji and the world. According to Ms. Sekiguchi, since opening in 2021, there has been a desire to feature meaningful artwork on the exterior of their establishment. She praised AFD as an ideal partner, being a member of their coworking space.
The Art for Change initiative will also allow the three artists to use the venue at no cost to conduct regular paid classes open to the public, focusing on how visual arts can inspire change and encourage social action. Ms. Sekiguchi mentioned the potential for partnerships to broaden this initiative, envisioning a transformation of Des Voeux Rd into an arts precinct featuring not only murals but also guided art walks, night markets, and various artistic showcases involving local creative talents.
